Atari “About TOS” Window Screen

The “About TOS” window, for GEM and TOS by Digital Research and Atari

In September 1984, Atari sent a team of its best engineers to the offices of Digital Research in Monterey, CA.  The teams goal was to port Digital Research’s GEM graphical user interface to Atari’s new line of 16-bit computers, beginning with the 520ST.  Through a quirk in the license agreement between Atari and Digital Research, Atari’s version of GEM was not required to make UI changes due to Apple’s lawsuit against Digital Research.
